Former Brighton and Chelsea coach Graham Potter was considered for the head coach position at Roma before the Giallorossi landed on Ivan Juric as the replacement for the recently-departed Daniele De Rossi, according to transfer expert Matteo Moretto.

According to Moretto’s latest updates in his Caught Offside Daily Briefing column, Roma had a shortlist of coaches to consider before settling on Juric, including the Englishman as an exciting possibility.

Moretto reports that most of the coaches that the Giallorossi considered were not Italian, and that the decision to appoint Juric was made by the owners, the Friedkin Group, rather than the club’s sporting director, Florent Ghisolfi.

Why Roma appointed Juric

In the end, Roma appointed former Torino and Hellas Verona coach Juric, as he is already familiar with the club and with Serie A as a league.

The club also felt that Juric’s style of play suited the players that they currently have at their disposal, and that the coach’s philosophy is in line with the club’s values.

It was also a benefit that Juric was available as a free agent following his departure from Torino at the end of the 2023-24 season, meaning the Friedkin Group did not have to pay compensation for his services.
