Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League hopes remain intact as they travel to MHP Arena to face VfB Stuttgart on Wednesday.
A 4-2 triumph over Manchester City last week put Luis Enrique’s men into a top-24 position in the UEFA Champions League and a spot in the knockout phase. That may be all for nothing if they can’t claim a result on Wednesday though, in a country that’s proven to be difficult a difficult place for them to win.
Entering the final matchday of the League Phase, Les Parisiens sit 22nd, though Man City and Dinamo Zagreb are just two points below them on the outside of a knockout zone.
PSG have lost eight of their 13 Champions League away contests played in Germany. The reigning Ligue 1 champions have only won three of those games. That’s a winning percentage of only 23% for them in games played in Germany at the tournament. It’s also their joint-worst Champions League win rate away from home with a minimum of six visits, equal to their win percentage in England.
Earlier in the Champions League this season, PSG were beaten 1-0 at Bayern Munich. Their last Champions League victory in Germany came in the first leg of the 2021 quarter-finals, defeating Bayern 3-2. Since then, they have gone winless in five consecutive visits to Germany, including a 1-0 loss at Borussia Dortmund in May 2024, losing that semi-final tie 2-0 on aggregate last season.
A victory – or a draw – at Stuttgart would assure them a place in the knockout phase.
PSG have not won an away match in Germany in the group stage of this tournament since claiming a 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in November 1994. Fortunately, all they need is a draw to book a place in the knockout phase.
