Real Madrid’s recent 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid marked yet another disappointment for coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has a forgettable record against Los Rojiblancos.
However, aside from his poor record against Atletico Madrid, it appears Ancelotti is simply experiencing a difficult season overall.
In fact, Real Madrid are experiencing its worst La Liga season under Ancelotti in terms of points earned after 23 matches.
The club currently sit at 50 points, marking the lowest tally in any of Ancelotti’s five seasons in charge.
While Madrid topped the 2023/24 season with 58 points at this stage and had strong showings in 2013/14 (57 points), 2014/15 (57 points), and 2021/22 (53 points), their current campaign has been far from ideal.
Several challenges have contributed to this underwhelming season, including an ongoing injury crisis, lack of trust in young players, and key summer departures.
Long-term injuries to key defenders such as Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal have left Ancelotti struggling to maintain stability at the back. The inconsistency in the lineup has led to dropped points in crucial games.
Another pressing issue has been the lack of faith in young talents. Despite promising performances from emerging players, Ancelotti has often opted for experience over youth, leaving some of Madrid’s brightest prospects with limited opportunities to prove themselves.
At the same time, Madrid’s great rival Barcelona have flourished thanks to the emergence of countless talents from La Masia.
The summer exits of veteran leaders like Nacho and Toni Kroos have also had a significant impact. Their departures left a void in leadership and experience, which has been felt in crucial moments throughout the season.
Ancelotti, therefore, has his task cut out as he not only looks to guide Real Madrid back to full form but also make sure that the team performs well in cup competitions.
