Inter Milan have sent a message of support to midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro after a racism incident during a Serie B match between Brescia and Sampdoria.
The club released a post on Twitter standing firmly behind the 20-year-old.
Furthermore, FCInterNews report on the circumstances of the racist abuse and Akinsanmiro’s reaction.
Midfielder Akinsanmiro has been the latest player to be subject to racist abuse during a football match in Italy. There have been a number of such high profile incidents in recent years.
These have included last January in a match between AC Milan and Udinese. Rossoneri goalkeeper Mike Maignan decided to walk off the pitch due to racist chants from Friulani fans.
Meanwhile, then-Inter striker Romelu Lukaku received racist abuse from Juventus fans during a Coppa Italia semifinal tie two seasons ago.
20-year-old midfielder Akinsanmiro is currently on loan at Sampdoria from Inter.
The Blucerchiati signed the Nigerian in the summer prior to this season.
This campaign has been Akinsanmiro’s first with regular senior football after starring for Inter’s Under-19 team.
The 20-year-old has started regularly for Sampdoria. That despite the fact that the Ligurian club have had an up-and-down season and changed coaches multiple times.
In a Serie B match away to Brescia, Akinsanmiro was among the starting eleven for Sampdoria.
“We’re all united against all forms of discrimination. We’re with you, Ebenezer.”
During that match, there were Brescia fans who were making racist “money” chants towards Akinsanmiro.
The Nigerian’s frustration boiled over after Sampdoria went ahead in the match. Blucerchiati striker Massimo Coda put his team ahead.
And during the celebrations, Akinsanmiro began making monkey gestures in the direction of the Brescia fans who had been racially abusing him.
This gesture was one of ironic defiance from the Inter-owned midfielder.
After the match, Brescia coach Pierpaolo Bisoli criticized Akinsanmiro. He suggested that the 20-year-old midfielder’s gesture was “inciting violence” by directly provoking a section of the fans.
Sampdoria coach Leonardo Semplici decided to substitute Akinsanmiro off a few minutes after the incident, as tempers threatened to boil over.
However, Inter have made clear their stance of support to Akinsanmiro. They sent out a message on Twitter, reading “We’re all brothers of the world.”
