Liverpool Eyeing Chelsea Target David Hancko as Potential Van Dijk Successor

Liverpool are reportedly keeping close tabs on Feyenoord defender David Hancko as they prepare for a potentially transformative summer transfer window. According to CaughtOffside, the Reds are one of several top European clubs considering the Slovakia international, with Chelsea, Tottenham, Bayern Munich, and Juventus all monitoring the 27-year-old’s situation.

Hancko Emerges as Key Defensive Target

Hancko’s rise at Feyenoord has been impressive, catching the attention of Europe’s elite. While Chelsea and Spurs expressed interest in January, no deal materialised, leaving the door open for Liverpool to swoop in. The club’s pursuit of Hancko could largely depend on the future of Virgil van Dijk, whose contract is nearing its end amidst mixed reports about his plans.

For Liverpool, retaining Van Dijk remains a top priority, given his continued stellar performances. However, if the Dutchman opts to move on, securing a capable replacement will be essential. Hancko, known for his composure and strength at the back, could be an ideal fit. Adding to his appeal is his connection with Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who previously coached him at Feyenoord.

Chelsea’s Defensive Woes Create Competition

While Liverpool may seem like an enticing destination, Chelsea pose a genuine threat in the race for Hancko’s signature. The Blues, struggling with defensive inconsistencies this season, are in desperate need of reinforcements. Players like Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo have failed to meet expectations, and Wesley Fofana’s injury troubles have further compounded their problems.

Hancko would likely slot straight into Chelsea’s starting XI, offering him a more immediate role compared to the uncertain scenario at Anfield, where his importance could hinge on Van Dijk’s decision.

Slot’s Influence Could Be Crucial

Liverpool’s advantage in this tug-of-war may lie in Arne Slot’s familiarity with Hancko. Having managed him at Feyenoord, Slot knows the defender’s strengths and leadership qualities, potentially giving Liverpool an edge in negotiations. If Van Dijk stays, Hancko could still provide much-needed depth, ensuring Liverpool remain solid at the back as they chase domestic and European glory.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

Let’s be honest—most Liverpool fans expect Virgil van Dijk to sign a new contract and stay at Anfield. The idea that the club is seriously eyeing David Hancko as a replacement feels premature, if not unnecessary. Van Dijk has consistently expressed his love for the club, and with his influence on and off the pitch, it’s hard to imagine Liverpool letting him walk away without a serious fight.

Assuming Van Dijk does stay, what does that mean for Hancko? Would he be satisfied playing second fiddle, especially at 27, when he’s hitting his prime? Spending big on a defender who might not even break into the starting XI seems questionable, particularly when Liverpool have other areas—like midfield depth—that could use reinforcement.

Then there’s Chelsea’s involvement. If Hancko is looking for guaranteed minutes, Stamford Bridge might be more appealing. Chelsea’s defensive issues are glaring, and Hancko would likely walk into their first team. At Liverpool, he’d be competing with not just Van Dijk, but also Konaté, Gomez, and Matip (if he stays fit).

Even with Arne Slot’s connection to Hancko, Liverpool fans will be wary. Familiarity doesn’t always guarantee success in the Premier League, and while Hancko has impressed in the Eredivisie, the jump to the EPL is significant. This feels more like a “nice to have” signing rather than a necessity.
