Declan Rice has said Arsenal ‘should have scored 10’ after dominating Tottenham in the North London derby.
Arsenal moved up to second in the Premier League table – and within four points of leaders Liverpool – after a 2-1 win over Spurs at the Emirates. Mikel Arteta’s team were good value for their win but were forced to come from behind to take the points.
Heung-min Son opened the scoring for the visitors with a strike that deflected off Thomas Partey, though Arsenal turned the game around before half-time.
Gabriel forced an own goal from Dominic Solanke after meeting Rice’s corner kick, before Leandro Trossard drilled in the winner on 44 minutes.
It was a statement result for the Gunners, whose season had been in danger of unravelling. Consecutive defeats to Newcastle and Manchester United in cup competition had increased the pressure on Arsenal heading into the derby clash. Rice admits it is a win that ‘meant more’ and believes the Gunners should have won in emphatic fashion.
“That meant more than anything. From the first minute, it was pure domination. You could tell it was a Derby,” Rice told TNT Sports.
“To be honest with you, we were unlucky, we probably should have scored 10 tonight.”
Match-winner Trossard said the win was what Arsenal ‘needed’ after a tough spell. He outlined the importance of putting pressure on Liverpool as Arsenal hunt down the leaders in the title race.
“This is what we needed. We all know that we have to win these games against Spurs. You can see what it means to the fans, they are buzzing. It is a great night for us.
“We want to win every game, especially these derby games. We were up for it today and managed to take three points.
“It is an amazing feeling [to score], especially when it ends up being the winner as well. I am just happy for everyone. We work so hard day in and day out. Now we need to look forward and build on it.
“The hardest thing in football is to get the ball in the net. I think that we could have scored more today as well but obviously we are happy with the three points.
“We always want to put pressure on them [Liverpool] but we can only look at ourselves. Try to win every game starting today. We need to look forward, take all the positives and enjoy this win.”
