Reports on Friday confirm that former Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri is not one of the candidates currently being sounded out by Roma, who are on the lookout for a permanent Claudio Ranieri replacement, despite a recent visit to the Italian capital.

Ranieri is currently serving as interim head coach of the Giallorossi following the sacking of Ivan Juric in November.

The 73-year-old will remain in the dugout until the end of the 2024-25 campaign, at which stage he will move into a directorship role. He will also have a say on the next permanent head coach at the Stadio Olimpico.

Several names have been linked with the Giallorossi job over the last few months, including Allegri, who was in Rome over the last week to watch some of the action at the Italian Open.

There had been suggestions that Roma could look to meet with Allegri, who has also been linked with a move to Napoli this week. However, reports from transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio on Friday confirm that Allegri is not one of the coaches that Roma are currently looking at.

Given that Stefano Pioli has also been ruled out of the running for the Roma job this week, there are just a few names on the current Giallorossi shortlist.

According to Friday’s reports, the names still under consideration by Roma include Genoa head coach Patrick Vieira, Francesco Farioli of Ajax, Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini, Como’s Cesc Fabregas and Xavi, formerly of Barcelona.

Xavi has also been in Rome this week, but has not met or spoken with any representatives from Roma. Fabregas, meanwhile, remains linked with a move to take over from compatriot Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
