Ruben Amorim says David Moyes is doing a better job than him as he prepares to face Everton tomorrow.
The Manchester United head coach was asked in the embargoed section of the pre-match press conference why Everton have enjoyed a new manager bounce and United haven’t.
“Simple thing is that David Moyes is doing a better job than me, it’s quite simple,” he replied. “And then small things like winning one game, two games, that belief.
“We have to give credit to the players and coach of Everton, and we aim to do the same.”
“If we win like two games, just one game, Everton, when you win, it’s easy to take the doubts of the players.
“For me, the only way to do it is to be really confident in transmitting the way you want to play and then win games.
“If you win games it’s going to be easy.”
The boss was then asked about the rumours that his squad were not fully behind him.
“I don’t feel it clearly. I don’t feel it in training. If you watch our games, you can have that sensation sometimes but I am not worrying about that. If they are not convinced, I don’t feel that. It’s my job to change their minds and I’m quite good on that.”
Asked again about the players’ difficulty in adapting to his system, he said:
“I don’t see it as a system of a back three, a back five or a back four. I think we can adapt, but I’m passing the principles. The principles have one beginning and then we go forward, we play with three, we play with four, we play with five. I think we can adapt from that system.
“I see principles that we can change the system, this way of playing, and we can adapt to a different system. When I started in Casa Pia [from a back four to a back three], I believed it was something I needed to do. I just know how to do the things I believe, that is all.”
He was then asked if he was considering signing free agents given his threadbare squad, but he was adamant he was not.
“No. We have young players, we work with young players. We really need to focus on that, while we have, at the moment, a lot of injuries. We need to use the young players.
“Otherwise, they don’t have the space to improve and show themselves. I think we really need to focus on the young players for the future of our club, because of the history and the reality of our club.”
Would there be any youngsters in tomorrow’s squad?
“Maybe they are in the squad, we will see tomorrow.”
