Atalanta have plunged into crisis following a third consecutive defeat without finding the net, as Lazio keep themselves in the hunt for the top four thanks to Gustav Isaksen.

Both teams had to readjust their ambitions after a recent drop-off in form, as La Dea were looking over their shoulders following back-to-back defeats to Inter and Fiorentina. Rafael Toloi, Stefan Posch, Odilon Kossounou, Gianluca Scamacca, Giorgio Scalvini and Marco Palestra missed out, but Ederson returned from suspension. The Aquile won only two of their last nine competitive matches and were preparing for the Europa League quarter-final with Matteo Guendouzi suspended, Patric and Alessio Romagnoli out of action, plus Taty Castellanos and Tijjani Noslin only fit for the bench. Christos Mandas was preferred to Ivan Provedel.

Nicolò Rovella made a crucial tackle as Ademola Lookman tried to squirm through a crowd of defenders in the penalty area, while Mattia Zaccagni allowed Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to spring the offside trap and dink a finish over Marco Carnesecchi, so Sead Kolasinac cleared from the open goal.

There was bad news for Lazio, as just 34 minutes into his comeback from the start, Nuno Tavares pulled up with a new muscular injury and was replaced by Luca Pellegrini.

Kolasinac’s flicked header went wide from a corner, but the lack of confidence caused by recent results was evident in both teams.

The first genuine shot on target came at the dawn of the second half, when Dele-Bashiru’s long-range strike dipped viciously, forcing a tricky Carnesecchi save at the near bottom corner.

Atalanta had an even more impressive chance, as Kolasinac pulled back from the by-line for a Mateo Retegui tap-in, denied by the extraordinary Mandas reaction save from six yards.

It was Lazio who broke the deadlock, as Dele-Bashiru shrugged off Isak Hien to run onto a long Mandas ball over the top and knock it down, where substitute Gustav Isaksen came sliding in to score from nine yards.

Mario Gila made a decisive header as last man to stop the Charles De Ketelaere cross reaching Retegui and Lookman in the six-yard box, but Samuel Gigot also limped off, giving Oliver Provstgaard his Lazio debut.

Mandas smothered a Davide Zappacosta strike and Carnesecchi had to fingertip the deflected Luca Pellegrini cross away, while Kolasinac went for the assist to Daniel Maldini rather than going for goal from close range, intercepted by Provstgaard.

Marco Brescianini’s glancing header turned a Zappacosta cross just wide of the back post.
