Leonardo Spinazzola scored against his former club with a delightful lob, allowing Napoli to extend their lead at the top of the table, as Roma were denied by the woodwork.

The Giallorossi rotated the squad after Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, but Bryan Cristante was back in the starting XI after a long lay-off. Romelu Lukaku returned to face his old club, but Mathias Olivera was injured and Alessandro Buongiorno on the bench for the first time in 2025.

Matteo Politano was rather harshly booked for simulation when he went down under a Niccolò Pisilli challenge, while Matias Soulè and Pisilli saw shots charged down from the edge of the area.

Napoli broke the deadlock in style, as Leonardo Spinazzola sprung the offside trap on a Juan Jesus ball over the top and waited for Mile Svilar to come rushing out before the precise lob into an empty net from a tricky angle. He did not celebrate against his former club.

On the stroke of half-time, a corner was not cleared effectively and Alex Meret got down for a big save on the Evan N’Dicka header that bounced right in front of him.

McTominay fired over from the edge of the box on a well-worked quick passing move, as did both David Neres and Angelino, while the Paredes free kick shook the wrong side of the net at the near top corner.

There was a scare when Rensch’s attempted goal-line clearance kicked it onto the underside of the bar, but it wouldn’t have counted as Lukaku was offside on the original shot.

Paredes was unfortunate not to equalise when he bent his free kick around the wall to thump the base of the near post on 75 minutes. Roma are accustomed to that, as it was the 12th time they have rattled the woodwork in Serie A this season.

Roma were pushing forward and snatched the equaliser in added time, as Alexis Saelemaekers stood up a cross from the right for Angelino’s precise volley from 12 yards, which squirmed through a sea of legs.

Another injury time equalizer in Serie A tonight! ⏱️ This time Angelino grabs a point for Roma against league leaders Napoli 🤝
