Roma ended Patrick Vieira’s unbeaten away record with a 3-1 victory over Genoa, including Artem Dovbyk’s tap-in and a Stephan El Shaarawy curler on his 300th appearance.

The Giallorossi started 2025 winning the Derby della Capitale, but then needed a 98th-minute penalty to hold Bologna 2-2. Bryan Cristante was still out of action. Genoa’s injury crisis dragged on, missing Milan Badelj, Vitinha, Junior Messias, Mario Balotelli, Caleb Ekuban, Brooke Norton-Cuffy, Ruslan Malinovskyi and Honest Ahanor, while Fabio Miretti shook off a knock to start.

Paulo Dybala came so close to an opener on nine minutes, as his free kick from 25 yards out smacked against the crossbar beyond Nicola Leali, the 11th time Roma have rattled the frame of the goal this season.

They did find the breakthrough when Koni De Winter missed the Alexis Saelemaekers cross whipped in from the right and Lorenzo Pellegrini was denied by Nicola Leali, but the goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Artem Dovbyk tapping in from point-blank range.

It went from bad to worse for Genoa, who lost Mattia Bani to a muscular injury, but they equalised moments later when Patrizio Masini got in front of Lorenzo Pellegrini to volley in Miretti’s corner from 12 yards. It was a huge way for the Genoa youth academy product to celebrate his first start.

Leali smothered a Leandro Paredes free kick and Pellegrini went off with an injury at half-time.

There was controversy when Stefano Sabelli with arm in an unnatural position charged down the ball in the penalty area, but while protests raged on and VAR was checking, Dybala laid it off for Stephan El Shaarawy to bend the finish first-time into the far bottom corner from the edge of the area. It was his 300th appearance for Roma and against his former club too.

The third goal was chaotic, as Manu Koné pulled back from the by-line and Johan Vasquez intercepted the Dovbyk tap-in, but it ricocheted off Leali and was already into the net before Dybala got the final touch.

Andrea Pinamonti’s scuffed volley skimmed the far post and Niccolò Pisilli fired wide after he was sent through by the impressive El Shaarawy, while Matias Soule’ curled just over on a corner in stoppages.
