Sheffield Wednesday's Josh Windass looks set to stay at the club despite interest from Santos.
It is ‘highly unlikely’ that Santos will meet Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer valuation of Josh Windass, with the Brazilian outfit ready to move on to other targets.
In a very surprising link, it was claimed earlier this month that the club famous for producing Pele and Neymar were keen on bringing in Windass, which would have seen him reunited with former Rangers chief Pedro Caixinha.
However, FLW exclusively revealed that the Yorkshire side had no intention of selling their key attacker, and the Sheffield Star has now stated that Santos are preparing to admit defeat in their efforts to bring the player to South America.
They say that Santos’ six-figure offer fell below the Owls’ valuation of Windass, and there’s a feeling that an agreement won’t be reached between the clubs, with Danny Rohl pushing to keep hold of his top scorer.
The 31-year-old has been outstanding for Wednesday this season, finding the net ten times, which includes some fantastic individual efforts, such as his strike from inside his own half against Derby County.
There had been doubt about his future though, with Windass’ current deal expiring in the summer, although it has since been confirmed that the club hold a 12-month option, which means he is essentially on a contract until the summer of 2026.
It remains to be seen whether the club will try to agree fresh terms with the player, who is playing some of the best football in his career right now.
So, keeping Windass is imperative, and whilst the chance to move to Brazil may have appealed, the forward hasn’t let the transfer talk become a distraction.
He remains focused on Wednesday, and Windass will no doubt be believing that they can defy the odds and reach the top six this season - and he will be aware of how big a role he will play in that push.
