Intriguing reading these comments from Spurs fans after the Newcastle United match.

It was over two months since Spurs fans saw their team win at home in the Premier League and now that record extends…

Now 17 goals conceded in their last five home games (all competitions) and the Tottenham manager under massive pressure after having seen his team defeated and outclassed by Newcastle United.

Only five points from the last possible twenty four and Ange Postecoglou finding himself now second favourite behind Julen Lopetegui in the latest Premier League sack race.

Eddie Howe’s side came and made it six wins in a row for NUFC, five victories against Spurs in the last six meetings, home and away.

Spurs fans commenting on this Newcastle United win via their top supporters forum:

‘Had a feeling Newcastle controlled every aspect of game after they conceded.

We caught them with unusual traditional cross from full-back, but after that? Till 60 minute for me they exactly knew how to go through our press, and how to press us on the other hand. As a result they bossed midfield completely.

After 60th they just sat deep. Only danger we generated was from crosses – so again, one could say Angeball was completely nullified by Howe and we had to try another ways in desperation.’

‘Many of the players had flue symptoms before the game.

And a ref who gave Toons a blatant handball goal away and should have sent off one of their players and had a penalty for another Toon handball.’

‘Saudis paying the ref again.’

‘Our backline actually did reasonably well, albeit under very little pressure second half.

Our midfield and attacking players were completely unable to break Newcastle down. Created very little of any note.

I don’t think Newcastle played well at all. I don’t think they had to.’

‘They had the best performing front three and midfield three throughout December – in a great run of form. Weren’t conceding goals either. Take that into account and add in the weird team we had to play, it was up to them to do the breaking down. Which they obviously did, just not as much as I expected.’

‘They dominated the first half after we took an early lead and from then on were clearly happy to contain. Never really seemed unsettled by us. Some hope? Meh, only if we’ve lowered the bar to a ridiculous degree. We were ok against a team who never really seemed like they needed to get out of third gear.

Depressing how far we have fallen.’

‘Our midfield and attacking players were completely unable to break Newcastle down. Created very little of any note.

I don’t think Newcastle played well at all. I don’t think they had to.’

‘Newcastle didn’t have to play well, they just faced a poor team and structure, they could of had more if they wanted.’

‘This is the most corrupt league on Earth, and will continue to be so as long as fans continue to deny the obvious.

EVERYTHING is slanted towards benefitting the biggest spending teams.’

‘No one can convince me that those ref – whether on the field or in the VAR – are always object in their decisions. Most have “hidden agendas”‘

‘Mates of mine that would never want to hear things like that just text me one word during the game “fix”.’

‘5th is not working. With our revenue, we should be challenging for the title.’

‘We sure should be challenging for trophies year in year out. Period.’

‘I’m telling you, I was always dead against the Super League. No joke, I’m now 100% in favour just so I don’t have to watch English refs every week.’

‘We have a coach who spent last season on a “we’ll just cop it!” posture

It made many of us furious. As we knew what was coming

Ange hasn’t a clue. Really.’

‘What was Solanke’s goal against Ipswich disallowed for btw?’

‘Handball. If he passed to another player after it hits his hand and they score it’s all good. That’s the rule these days.’

‘They make it up to suit whatever outcome they want each week.’

‘It’s the actual rule, rubbish rule but been for a couple of seasons now.’

‘There were multiple times in that first half when we were in such a hurry to take a goal kick that Austin nearly took them when Newcastle still had a couple of players in our penalty area. The team plays frazzled football and doesn’t know how to manage moments in games.’

‘I look at Newcastle’s behaviour first half and I refuse to believe they would be that reckless if they didn’t know in advance they were getting away with it.’

‘Yep, must’ve had a super secret meeting with the FA beforehand where the football illuminati told them they could foul at will.

Do you really believe this sh..? The referee let things go that referees let go all the time in big games because they don’t want to ruin them with reds. It’s not unique to us.

Was it bad refereeing? Yes. Was it some conspiracy? Obviously not. FFS.’

‘Ange is a very angry man, he must be under pressure from the above to get results. I hate blaming referees full stop, the match is 90mins, we scored one they scored two we lost end off.

I think we need a manager with a game plan and strategies.’

‘Leaving aside the debate over the handball, the first goal we conceded yesterday is a good example of the reckless way Ange demands that we play.

We’ve just gone in front against a superior team and have a young, patched up side out. We know we struggle to defend a lead or keep a clean sheet. Yet in the next play, the keeper rolls the ball to Gray inside the box when there are 5 Newcastle players ready to press. Gray plays a pass to Sarr who has two players rushing at him. He sees the danger but overhits his pass to Bergvall and we lose possession in an incredibly dangerous area and concede.

That’s the thing that’s going to get Ange the sack. There is no appreciation of the game state, no recognition of our position in the table and our relegation form, no respect for the opponent. There is no communication with the team when he’s on the sideline. There was no need to play at a hundred miles an hour like that especially after we took the early lead against a much better team. Ange fundamentally does not believe in the idea of protecting the lead, taking the sting out of the game, slowing the game down. It’s all out attack, all the time. We saw the same silly sh.. against Chelsea when we were 2-0 up.

Meanwhile when Newcastle came out for the second half, they focused on protecting their lead and they won the game without their keeper having to make a meaningful save. Ange is never going to get anywhere at this level with his childish insistence that the only way to win a game is to attack recklessly for 90 minutes.’

‘Good post.

Plus when Gray is rolled the ball his back to to the entire pitch, he can’t see what is behind him and all the newcastle players running towards him. It was a bad decision by the keeper and by a player who isn’t a centre back so wasn’t positioned correctly. But it’s from the manager like you say.’

‘Austin played 13 long balls across the 90 mins yesterday, the most any keeper has played for us in any 90 min match this season, only 4 were successful by the way because Solanke kept getting smothered by Burn and the ball kept coming back.’

‘What pi..ed me off is that despite playing an inform bogey team, with all the injuries and a virus outbreak we actually started well and took the lead which did shake Newcastle, only for it to be ripped away near instantly by an illegal goal.

That was utter bullsh.., everyone knew it and not only did it fix the score for Newcastle it must have been a crushing blow coming so soon after we deservedly were in front.

Which other examples can anyone point to where there have been blatant handballs like that and play continues like nothing happened? Is this the ‘new’ normal now? Or just a typical changing the rules for Tottenham situation.

The way they timewaste and go to the corner flag is pathetic. It’s a mid season league game not the World Cup final ffs. Scared to play football, against an injury ravaged and virus hit struggling team.’

‘That is an embarrassing comment.’

‘There’s a lot of whining about stupid sh.. here. Much bigger issues with our team than whether some referee calls went our way.’

‘For me the fact that VAR allowed the Newcastle equaliser today is a damning indictment of how corrupt the Premier League has become.’

‘The rules are really clear. The fact a goal follows from that phase of play doesn’t change the fact it wasn’t a handball because it was accidental contact and his hands were in a natural position.

The only time it becomes a foul is if the player who handballed it then scores (either directly from the handball or in that phase of play).’

‘Joelinton should have been gone today for about five yellows. Dan Burn should have gone for the deliberate handball.

I’m pretty sure we are usually the first team carded, certainly carded for less fouls than the opponent.’

‘They sat back in the second half, otherwise this could have been another Liverpool-esque one sided scoreline. Especially Gordon and Isak would have a field day in transition, against a dodgy CB duo of Spence and Gray.’

‘I’ve got sympathy with Ange’s plight, and I think on the balance of play you could make a case for us deserving a draw maybe, but not sure what Ange was watching to be so bullish about us deserving the win, it smacked a little of a man under pressure.

That first half garbage was largely of Ange’s starting that midfield – Kulusevski and Sarr are useless at playing out under pressure (Kulusevski just refuses to drop or show and Sarr’s passing becomes sloppy when pressured – as we saw for their equaliser) and Newcastles midfield three are one of the strongest at applying and punishing that pressure.

Bergval did ok, but was caught over dribbling a few times because Sarr and and Kulusevski weren’t available – and Son and Johnson are pretty useless in deep build up too. Porro and Spence tried to help but how the f… you can watch Newcastle and think you’ll get away with Kulusevski and Sarr as 8’s with a 19yo kid as the pivot was pretty daft.’

‘My post match thoughts after a few hours of reflection. First and foremost the players gave their all. They were outmatched but they kept plugging away, and for that you have to give Ange credit. He doesn’t have me, but he still has the dressing room by the looks of it.’

‘Newcastle were close to full strenght today while we were anything but! I’ve no doubt we are a better team than them but we might have to wait until next season before we can show it.’
