Defeat at Mestalla in an even match where two isolated actions tipped the scales in favor of the home side. Míchel Sánchez's men, with many rotations in the eleven after the Champions League match at the Parc des Princes, were much more protagonists with the ball, but they struggled to find a way to threaten the Valencians in the final meters and conceded two long-range shots despite playing a serious game in defense. In a scoreless draw, with few chances in both areas, bad luck also played its part, as both shots, from Luis Rioja and Dani Gómez, bounced off a defender and the change of trajectory helped them to end up in the back of the net.
Míchel Sánchez's men had a lot of the ball during the first half, but without reaching Mamardashvili's domains with danger. The team from Girona made a small step forward in the second half, generating better offensive situations and even enjoying a dangerous arrival of Danjuma, who shot too much forced. A loss of possession shortly after, however, led to Luis Rioja's first goal, with a shot from outside the area that bounced off Juanpe's legs and changed its trajectory, leaving Gazzaniga with no chance of getting there. The second goal followed just two minutes later, in an almost identical action, but this time with Dani Gómez as the protagonist. Misehouy had the clearest chance with a header from a corner kick, but Mamardashvili deflected the ball very safely. Girona tried until the end and also claimed a penalty, but without success to change the score in a complicated field despite the bad start of the league of Valencia.
Girona will play four games in the next two weeks, and three of them will be at Montilivi. It is time to turn the page of the defeat, and this Wednesday Míchel Sánchez's team will host Rayo Vallecano with the possibility of adding three points again. The red-and-whites visit Celta Vigo on Sunday, and the following Wednesday the stadium and the fans will experience for the first time the sensation of playing a Champions League match at home, against Feyenoord. That same Sunday, the match against Athletic at home will close an intense period of competition and will give way to the second national team stop of the season.
