The Brazilian icon Rivaldo is among the biggest names to have played for FC Barcelona in the illustrious history of the club. He won a Ballon d’Or and scored 132 goals for the Catalan side during the years 1997-2002.

Now retired, he frequently comments on the things taking place at his former club, and this has also been the case on the eve of a crucial match for the Blaugrana side, as they take on Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Sunday.

Both these teams are competing for the league title and are separated by only a single point on the table, and thus, this game can have significant implications for the La Liga race, in which Real Madrid is also a contender.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Rivaldo admitted the importance of this game but also emphasised that they will still have time to make things right even if they lose on Sunday:

“It’s the famous six-point match, but Barcelona is calm, alive in all competitions, and already leading La Liga. Winning would be good to distance Atlético, but even if they lose, there are still many matches ahead.”

Further commenting on them being alive in all the competitions, the Brazilian believed Barcelona have a chance of winning the treble:

“With the way they are playing—joyfully, united in the locker room, and respecting the coach’s instructions—they can go far. Barcelona is very much alive in all three competitions and has everything it takes to win another treble.”

However, he still had a word of caution for his former team, and particularly emphasised Liverpool’s recent elimination from the UCL to make his point:

“Many did not imagine Liverpool’s elimination happening the way it did—winning away and then falling in penalties at home. I think Barcelona must learn a lesson from this. They finished first in the new league phase, while Barcelona was in second place, so the team must be very attentive to avoid being caught off guard like the English team was.”

There is definitely wisdom in Rivaldo’s words, and despite their good form since the start of 2025, the Blaugranes will have to ensure they play their best in the upcoming matches to end the season on a successful note.
