Talented midfielder Toby Collyer was handed his first Europa League start yesterday in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Rangers at Old Trafford.
The 21-year-old joined United from Brighton & Hove Albion and has been a pivotal player for the club’s academy.
He was in the matchday squad for seven Premier League matches and once in the FA Cup last season.
Collyer made his competitive debut during the Community Shield encounter with Manchester City, replacing Kobbie Mainoo just before the hour mark.
Former manager Erik ten Hag handed him his league debut in the 3-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford, replacing Casemiro, who was poor in the encounter.
Collyer has impressed manager Ruben Amorim. He has named him on the matchday squad for six league games.
The midfielder was a substitute against Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion before Amorim handed him his first-ever competitive start for United against Rangers.
Collyer had a decent game against the Scottish side, recording ground-breaking statistics.
He became the first United player since the 2003/2004 campaign to record more than 50 passes in his first appearance at Old Trafford in a major European competition, per OptaJoe.
Collyer recorded 94 percent passing accuracy, registered 58 touches and completed the two dribbles he attempted.
He was decent defensively, winning three of the four ground duels he contested and recorded two interceptions. He won none of his aerial duels.
Manuel Ugarte replaced him in the 73rd minute as Amorim decided to introduce fresh legs in midfield.
His qualities are not in doubt, having impressed Ten Hag and Amorim, who play with different tactical set-ups.
Ugarte and Mainoo have played as the central midfielders under Amorim. Collyer must improve to break into the starting line-up.
With his impressive work rate, which he displayed against Rangers, he has the potential to become a key player for United.
