Tottenham Hotspur have several holes to plug in the summer. Spurs had to deal with several injuries this season that left them short-staffed in key areas, and they must reinforce their numbers in the transfer window.

One position where Tottenham need to sign a new player is defensive midfield. Yves Bissouma has been erratic and should be sold if the opportunity to shift him off the books arises.

Rodrigo Bentancur is serviceable at best. He is a decent midfielder on his days, but Spurs need someone specialised at breaking up opposition attacks and screening the backline.

One of the many reasons Tottenham have struggled this season is that there is not enough protection for the defence from midfield, and Spurs need to address it.

Luckily, one of the best in the business could be available this summer, and Tottenham should be trying to snap him up.

According to German football journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern consider Joao Palhinha sellable. The Portuguese enforcer has struggled in Bavaria and might be on the market if suitors come calling.

Palhinha was impressive in the Premier League, and Spurs should consider pushing to sign him.

Palhinha was a destroyer in the Fulham engine room. The former Sporting CP star made 152 tackles last term, winning 75, surpassing his 148 tackles in his 2022/23 debut season for Marco Silva’s side. In both seasons, he recorded the most tackles in the Premier League.

Palhinha was key for Silva. The manager praised him during his time at Fulham, saying, “His attitude and his commitment the way he leads the others around are things that are hard to find in football.”

Tottenham could use that aggression in their relatively tepid centre. He would bring the kind of steel Spurs lack and give them some bite. The Portugal international gives Spurs height in midfield. He also has an eye for goals.

If Palhinha is available this summer, Spurs must do everything to sign him. The 29-year-old can be the missing puzzle in midfield.

Palhinha is a profile Tottenham do not currently have in their engine room, but it is one they desperately need.
