After the masterclass in midweek against Real Madrid, Paulo Fonseca has come under fire for the choices he made in last night’s draw against Cagliari.
Fonseca made the decision to use a five-man defence against Los Blancos and it proved to be a beneficial switch. However, there were question marks regarding whether the same precautions were needed against a struggling Cagliari side.
The fact that Milan let in three goals against a team who had previously scored nine in 11 games suggests that the defensive fix was only temporary and it certainly brings the Rossoneri back down to earth.
MilanNews have compiled the ratings of the main newspapers in Italy that were given to Fonseca, with the general theme being crticism of his choices.
La Gazzetta dello Sport (5): “Sorry to Camarda, but the starting line-up is wrong. Milan lives on individual initiatives, no team play. A step backwards.”
Il Corriere dello Sport (5.5): “The attack creates, the defence destroys. The weak point of his team is the defensive phase. A fully blown match, they concede three more goals.”
Tuttosport (5.5): “Milan in the Dutch style, the high defence even amuses the opponents. Now they’re watching the Scudetto battle through binoculars.”

Il Corriere della Sera (5): “Two steps backwards after Madrid. He had predicted that it would be tough. A correct prediction. But it’s not a great consolation, neither for him nor for Milan, on the contrary.”
MilanNews (5): “The insufficient score is not so much for the 3-3 conceded in the 90th minute, but for the failure to read the strong side of Cagliari, where Zortea and Zappa called the shots.
“He off the only player who shouldn’t have been taken off, namely Rafael Leao who was having an evening of absolute grace. Two points thrown away also because of him.”
