What Newcastle United fans were saying 7 months ago when starting Carabao Cup adventure – Interesting

Interesting to look back at what Newcastle United fans were saying seven months ago, after watching their team defeat Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup second round.
At that point, both clubs had played two Premier League games.
Newcastle United doing really well with 10 men to beat Southampton 1-0, whilst on their opening weekend Forest were drawing 1-1 at home to Bournemouth.
The following Weekend, it was Forest winning 1-0 at Southampton, whilst Newcastle were drawing 1-1 on the south coast against Bournemouth.
When Forest and Newcastle then met on Wednesday 28 August 2024, both Forest and Newcastle United fans would have struggled to guess how their seasons would turn out.
It was a first game back for Tonali after his suspension and United scored very early through Willock and looked as though they were going to take Forest apart, only for the home side to not concede any more and get a goal of their own through Jota just after the break.
With Forest going first in the eventual penalty shoot out and scoring their first three spot-kicks, it looked bleak when they led 3-1 due to Joelinton seeing his effort saved after Isak had scored United’s first.
However, Nick Pope psyched out the next two Forest players who failed, whilst Bruno, Gordon and Sean Longstaff won it for Newcastle as they kept their cool.
Seven months on and Forest fans find their team third in the table and in the FA Cup quarter-finals, whilst Newcastle United fans are looking forward to Wembley on Sunday and now sixth in the league, only two points off Chelsea in fourth and four point behind Forest.
Nick Pope won an early penalty shoot out against Palace on the way to Newcastle getting to the 2023 Carabao Cup Final, history repeating itself this year.
Interesting to read what Newcastle United fans were thinking in the immediate aftermath of that penalty shoot out victory over Forest, that cleared the opening Carabao Cup hurdle this season…
Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey:
‘Three one down, four three up!
After the first five penalties, we looked down and out. Five penalties later, well done Sean Longstaff, no pressure!
Not a great performance granted, although I thought we looked much better in the final twenty minutes.
Tell me ma!’
Nat Seaton:
‘WE WON!!! Enough said…
However, we squandered a great start and looked how we have in the last couple of games again.
Hopefully some improvement forthcoming when we take on Spurs at the weekend.
It was so worth being here just for that final penalty, what a feeling!!! Going home very happy and feeling very different to 30 minutes ago!! Thanks lads.’
Billy Miller:
‘Should’ve won that in normal time, especially after the start we got off to.
Thought we were the better side and Tonali gave us a decent hour, although he could’ve made it the perfect comeback with his one on one.
Happy to get through and wonderful reception for Sandro and you could see how much he loved it.
If you’re an optimist that’s three games unbeaten.
If you’re a pessimist that’s an average of a goal a game and one win in normal time.’
Simon Ritter:
‘United deserved to qualify for round three for many reasons.
Our starting team was stronger than Forest’s.
We played the best moves.
We tested Miguel more than Forest tested Pope.
And our five penalties were on target, whereas two of Forest’s were not.’
GToon:
‘Brilliant result in the end.
Some decent performances in the game and great to see Sandro back.
That result could be huge and we deserved it.
Get in!’
David Punton:
‘Was the kick start we needed!
One of the hardest ties of the round, a nerve shredding night and then through on the dreaded spot kicks.
Heroics from Sean Longstaff as cold as ice after some wayward penalty attempts from Forest handed us the initiative.
It’s a lottery and our numbers came in.
As for the game, we’ve played a 1-1 and a goal after just 18 seconds. Lacklustre from there but ended stronger than the hosts, who made a whopping ten changes.
Willock injury a hammer blow. Cruel.’
Jamie Smith:
‘It’s still not quite working is it?
I’m just glad to be in the next round but the performance wasn’t good against a Forest scratch team.
Hopefully it’s the catalyst for a positive turnaround, with the transfer window closing by the next game and a boost tonight in a squeaky win, as well as the Tonali return.
I’m sure it’s just a short term dead leg for Willock but if not, it’s despair.
He gives us that essential running from midfield and I hope he’s there for a full part this season.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘It was good to get stuck into an old fashioned cup tie.
Well, it was always going to penalties wasn’t it?
Just a shame there were empty seats tonight in the home end.
Maybe sometime in the distant future, clubs will start putting fans first and if they cannot sell the tickets, give them away to the less fortunate, although that might be something of a logistical challenge for the folk 12 miles down the road.’
Bazoox:
‘What a start.
Followed shortly after by more heartache for Little Joe. We huffed and puffed and were poor after that.
After Forest equalised I was beginning to get that all too familiar feeling. Near the end though we should have won it.
Nice to see our luck seems to have changed in penalty shoot-outs.
Eddie put out a good side with a strong bench. This is how it should always be.
Still to find our mojo and it’s now on to Spurs at James’ Park at the weekend.’
