I hear a lot of talk along the lines of “Why don’t Newcastle United ever win at Liverpool?”

I always point to two things when people say that.

Before I get into that, a few other things to mention.

In living memory, Newcastle United have at times done pretty well against Liverpool.

In the relegation season of 1988/89, Newcastle won 2-1 at Anfield (Dave Beasant!) and drew 2-2 at St James’ Park (Mirandinha and Frankie Pingel!)

That set off an eight game run where Newcastle United only lost one of eight games against Liverpool, winning four of them, home and away.

Two of the last three in that eight game sequence were at Anfield, a comprehensive 2-0 Premier League win April 1994, then a 1-0 League Cup win (Watson!) in November 1995.

Needless to say, our luck then ran out big time at Anfield in the very next match, a certain 4-3 in April 1996.

From that point on, Newcastle have never won at Anfield again, not ahead of tonight anyway.

However, since the mid-1990s, Newcastle United did then go on to win another eight times against Liverpool, though they were all at St James’ Park, the last one in 2015, another season where United ended up relegated!

Anyway, my big two points when people ask why don’t Newcastle United win at Liverpool?

Firstly, just like when we play any team these days and stats are brought up over a sizeable period, a decade and a half of that period is when Mike Ashley ran/ruined NUFC! Why would anybody think the Ashley era stats have any relevance to now???

Secondly, a stat that I pretty much never see getting mentioned. It is really quite extraordinary.

Since 1962, over 60 seasons worth, what do you think the lowest position Liverpool have finished in the league?

You won’t believe this, but since 1962, Liverpool have never finished lower than eighth in the top tier!!!

Absolutely incredible.

Such a well run stable club, where their downs would be seen as massive ups for most fans of other clubs!

So basically, every time Newcastle United have gone to Anfield these past 60+ seasons, they have faced a top eight team.
