With the January transfer window fast approaching it does appear that Manchester City do need to reinforce several positions to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad. Signing another midfielder seems an obvious move for the world champions to make. But it does appear that signing another striker is another move for Manchester City to make. But who could come in to provide support and cover for Erling Haaland? That appears to be the question. A new report indicates that City’s search for a striker could see them potentially raid the Bundesliga in their hunt for another attacker.
Pete O’Rourke has reported for Football Insider that Manchester City have learned the asking price for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Egyptian international Omar Marmoush. O’Rourke further reports that Eintracht Frankfurt are set to demand between £50-60 million to sell Marmoush in January. Furthermore, O’Rourke adds that Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Liverpool have all shown an interest in signing Marmoush. Lastly, O’Rourke adds that Eintracht Frankfurt may be reluctant to sell Marmoush in January due to his importance to the Bundesliga side.
So far this season Omar Marmoush has starred for Eintracht Frankfurt. The Egyptian international has scored 14 goals and added 10 assists in 16 appearances in all competitions this season. That form has caught the eye of Manchester City and a host of other clubs as per O’Rourke’s report. If Marmoush’s form holds, it would not be a surprise to see him make a move to a bigger club next summer rather than January. I can’t see Eintracht selling Marmoush in January unless a massive offer comes in.
But as Pete O’Rourke points out there is one problem with Manchester City’s reported interest in Marmoush. Would he settle for a role as Erling Haaland’s backup? Any striker Manchester City target is unlikely to start over City’s number 9. They may play alongside Haaland on occasion, but starting over Haaland doesn’t appear to be a realistic possibility. Any striker City sign will be Haaland’s back up, only starting when the Norwegian international is injured or in need of a rest. Would a player like Marmoush who is having a breakout season settle for that role with Manchester City? That appears unlikely and Pete O’Rourke’s report appears to confirms that.
Omar Marmoush does look like a player destined for a big move based on his play this season. If he continues his stunning start to the season for the whole 24/25 season that would appear to be a formality. But would he settle for a lesser role to join Manchester City? That doesn’t appear to be a realistic move so City may have to look elsewhere to find another striker to provide cover for Erling Haaland.
