FC Barcelona manage to secure a brilliant victory against SL Benfica in the UEFA Champions League. A well-fought but relatively comfortable win for the Catalan giants, as they eased past the Portuguese opposition. With this win, Barcelona have now secured a place in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
A 3-1 scoreline saw Raphinha grab himself a brace and also saw Lamine Yamal produce magic on the pitch. Across the board, it was a performance that Hansi Flick can be proud of and it made sure that Barcelona were the deserving victors of this game.
Here are the player ratings for Barcelona.
Player Ratings:
Wojciech Szczesny: 6.5
Unlike the first leg, Wojciech Szczesny was barely tested in this game by the opposition. A comfortable game for the Polish veteran, and one that he would not mind playing over and over again.
Jules Kounde: 7.5
Great at doing his duties well throughout the game, as the Frenchman effectively played well both defensively and offensively. He tracked back well and offered Lamine Yamal a brilliant option on the wide flank as well whenever he overlapped him.
Ronald Araujo: 6.0
If there was one player who looked to be out of place in that Barcelona defense, it was Ronald Araujo. Even when everyone else knew exactly where to be and what to do, the Uruguayan looked lost and it even cost Barça a goal from a corner.
Inigo Martinez: 8.5
A commander in the defense, Inigo Martinez led that Barcelona backline against SL Benfica. Shouting orders during set-pieces and defending the ball well whenever it came towards him, he also constantly made sure to catch the Benfica players offside as well.
Alejandro Balde: 8.5
Simply brilliant in transitions, both in terms of tracking back and pushing forward, Alejandro Balde was sublime in this game. Whenever Barcelona made a counterattack, he was usually one of the primary threats and it kept Benfica at bay. He even provided the assist for Raphinha’s second goal.
Frenkie de Jong: 8.0
Gave Barcelona a lot of composure in midfield and often dropped deep to become a third passing option for his centre-backs as well. His presence allowed Pedri to play more freely and dictate play as he wanted to.
Pedri: 9.0
The Spanish magician was everywhere, both in attack and in defense. From creating chances to linking up play like a man possessed, Pedri left no stone unturned. Even defensively, he tracked back constantly and helped in making sure that Benfica did not get the opportunity to hurt Barcelona.
Lamine Yamal: 9.5
In many ways, Lamine Yamal was extraordinary today. When it came to taking on his man, the Benfica defender marking him stood no chance. Moreover, the Spanish winger managed to not just produce arguably one of the best assists of this ongoing UCL campaign, but also delivered a potential goal of the competition all through his individual brilliance.
Dani Olmo: 7.5
Gradually grew into the game and began to assert himself more and more. This allowed Barcelona to thrive even more in attack, as well as in terms of control of the game when the midfielders started to link up more consistently with the Spaniard.
Raphinha: 9.0
Yet another player who put a masterclass on display alongside the other Barcelona stars. The Brazilian forward was clinical and continues to excel against SL Benfica. By the end of the first half, he had a brace to his name and looked to have completely crushed the opposition.
Robert Lewandowski: 5.0
An extremely sluggish and rather irritating performance from Robert Lewandowski. Never seemed to do anything with intent and even when he had the ball, he never had the creativity or even the basic sense to make the right decision. Whereas the entire team seemed to have entered a flow state, he was a weak link.
Ferran Torres: 6.5
Brought in some energy to the team and added a lot more intensity and pressure as the centre-forward as he came on for Robert Lewandowski.
Gavi: 6.5
Added extra work-rate in that Barcelona midfield and did whatever he had to in order to keep Benfica as far away from the goal as possible.
Fermin Lopez: N/A
Not enough time or influence on the game to warrant a rating.
Marc Casado: N/A
