We’re back with our rundown of the best football fixtures for you to watch this weekend. The latest offerings feature title race clashes in the Premier League, Bundesliga and Serie A, alongside a huge promotion battle in the Championship.
Here are our five must-watch games of the weekend.
Two sides aiming to return to the promised land of the Premier League do battle at Bramall Lane on Friday evening. Sheffield United have bounced back admirably from relegation and the sale of several key names, with the Blades behind leaders Leeds only on goal difference.
The form team in the division across the last 10 games, confidence is high ahead of the arrival of Sunderland. Régis Le Bris’s side raced out of the traps this season but their form has stalled of late. Sunderland have drawn five successive league games.
Paris Saint-Germain remain the dominant force in Ligue 1, but Marseille and Monaco are competing for the best of the rest title. Sat third and second in the table respectively, the sides go head-to-head at The Stade Vélodrome this weekend.
The out-of-form hosts know a win will see them leapfrog the Principality club in the table.
We might just have a Serie A title race for the ages this season.
Just a point separates the top five in Italy right now, with Juventus only three further back in sixth, as two of the table’s high-flyers meet this weekend. Fiorentina have reeled off seven wins on the spin to emerge as unlikely title contenders, having combated the sales of star names Nicolas Gonzalez and Nikola Milenkovic in the summer.
Their run has moved them level on points with defending champions Inter Milan, who arrive at The Stadio Artemio Franchi this weekend. Tune in to this one.
Germany’s glamour fixture returns this weekend as Borussia Dortmund host Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker.
After being dethroned by Bayer Leverkusen last season, Bayern have been in ominous form this time around to open up a healthy six-point lead at the top. The Bavarians arrive into the contest after a big win over Paris Saint-Germain in Europe, with this the second of three huge games for Vincent Kompany’s side. After facing Dortmund, Bayern take on last season’s double winners Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal.
In contrast, Dortmund have struggled for consistency under Nuri Sahin. Sixth in the table, defeat would leave them a mammoth 13 points behind the league leaders. Confidence can be taken from their European form, however, with four wins from five in the Champions League.
Liverpool and Manchester City has been the defining Premier League rivalry of recent seasons.
Jurgen Klopp might have moved on but the stakes remain high, as Arne Slot’s league-leading Liverpool look to put another nail in City’s title coffin. On a run of six games without a win, City could become the first defending Premier League champions to lose four successive games.
Defeat would leave them 11 points behind the Reds, and facing a huge task to defend their crown.
