AS Monaco’s win over local rivals OGC Nice (2-1) on Saturday not only asserted regional supremacy, it also put them in the driving seat in the race for UEFA Champions League football.

Goals from Mika Biereth and Breel Embolo allowed Monaco to come from behind to beat Nice at the Stade Louis II. The two sides went into that game in third and fourth in the Ligue 1 table, tied on points and on goal difference. However, thanks to the win, Les Monégasques made a big step, going above Olympique de Marseille, who lost to Stade de Reims earlier in the day.

For many weeks, OM looked to have secured that second place but with just one win in their last five, Roberto De Zerbi’s men slipped to third. “It is a fantastic weekend for us,” said Adi Hütter in a press conference attended by Get French Football News.

He added, “The momentum is really good jumping into second place. Today (Saturday) we were the better team, better on the pitch. It was an important victory.”

Given Monaco’s difficult calendar (matches against Stade Brestois, RC Strasbourg Alsace and Olympique de Marseille in April before closing out the season with games against Olympique Lyonnais and RC Lens) the win over their local rivals could prove crucial come the end of the campaign.
