Five opponents, ten matches and one big aim! The title race has barely been this close before, and our boys are brimming to continue their big catch-up job. Our head coach Thomas Letsch is certain: "This will be the most exciting championship group since the format was introduced!"
There was some movement in the table in the final match of the regular season, with LASK slipping out of the top six and their local rivals in blue making the championship round instead. Time to take a look what we can expect in the coming weeks against our final five opponents of the season!
The reigning champions made a strong start to the season, soon securing a comfortable league lead. A difficult winter then followed with coach Christian Ilzer leaving along with a few key performers - and that has showed in their more recent form. We have taken eight points in our last four matches, with Sturm having to be content with four in that time. We played a proud part of our own in that poor run with a 3-1 win at home that made good for our away humbling earlier in the season. We are therefore ready to go into a fierce title race, with just four points separating us from the top, and everything in our own hands!
Our home match against SK Sturm Graz will mark our Family Day for this year. Along with a side programme for our young fans, there will be free tickets available for all children up to the age of 13.
Austria Vienna have been the biggest surprise of the Bundesliga season – with the side from the capital deservedly going level on points with Sturm at the top of the table. We have been able to crack Stephan Helm's secret in our meetings, however, winning both matches while keeping clean sheets. Austria have two title hopes - with Hartberg waiting in a cup semi-final at the start of April.
On the subject of surprises of the season … you cannot rule WAC out of that category. The Carinthians have been extremely solid this season, particularly in defence. We had two close clashes, with a goalless draw away from home before a narrow win in our final regular match of the season thanks to Oscar Gloukh's winning goal from distance. That Dietmar Kühbauer's squad was boosted further in the winter break with the likes of former international Alessandro Schöpf shows just how ambitious the club have become - with two exciting clashes in the championship group to be expected. WAC also have a cup semi-final against LASK ahead.
It looked like Rapid were on course to lose their long-expected place in the championship group, only for a big win against GAK in the final match of the regular season to secure their spot. Robert Klauß's side have been struggling to keep up with their early-season form, however. We happened to face Rapid at their strongest, with a disappointing 2-3 defeat and a 2-2 home draw the result. We are eager to put the record straight and we have the chance for that at the start of the championship group – with information for everyone who wants to support us in the Allianz Stadion to follow soon! Ending the season with an Austrian Klassiker at home certainly also gives us something to look forward to.
In the final match of the regular season, BW Linz managed to sneak past city rivals LASK - of all clubs - and secure their spot in the championship group! The side from Austria's steel city are certainly not one to underestimate. We took a clear 5-1 home win at home, only to slip to a 0-2 away defeat earlier in the season. One thing that was clear from our last trip to Linz was that we have to pay particular attention to striker Ronivaldo – who is the league's top scorer with 13 goals! The strength of our defence of late leaves us optimistic that we can keep a handle on the Brazilian this time.
You can secure your seats for the five matches at the Red Bull Arena! Tickets for the final match of the season at home to Rapid are available exclusively to users already registered, with tickets for all other home matches on open sale.
