As per reports from De Telegraaf, Jordan Henderson (34) will miss Ajax’s away match against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League playoff round on Thursday.
The midfielder has not recovered from an injury he sustained in the first half of Sunday’s match against Fortuna Sittard. He is joined in the medical bay by Branco van den Boomen and adds to an injury list that sees Youri Regeer, Owen Wijndal and Wout Weghorst all out for extended periods.
Initially, it was uncertain which stadium Thursday’s game against Union would take place in, due to snow and rain in Brussels. However, while the FA instructed Union to look for another venue, the pitch of the King Baudouin Stadium was brought back from a bad condition and deemed playable thanks to the use of heat blowers.
Union Saint-Gilloise play their league matches at the Joseph Marien Stadium. However, with this not meeting UEFA requirements, they usually play their European games at the King Baudouin Stadium.
Conditions were so bad in Brussels that Union actually asked their opponent Ajax not to train at the stadium in order to save the field. They trained in Amsterdam instead, while the evening’s ‘hosts’ trained in their own stadium.
