Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has been crowned the 2024 winner of the FIFA Puskas Award, the annual prize handed out to the 'most beautiful' goal scored.
Garnacho's stunning overhead kick against Everton in the Premier League – scored in November of last year – only just missed the entry window for the 2023 prize, meaning that the Argentine has waited a long time for this accolade.
It was an outstanding moment of athleticism that came completely out of the blue in just the third minute of the game at Goodison Park. There were shade of Wayne Rooney vs Manchester City in 2011 and he took flight to meet Diogo Dalot's cross from the right flank.
"I can't believe it to be honest," a bewildered Garnacho told Sky Sports at the time.
"I didn't see how I scored. I just listened to the crowd and said, 'Oh my god'. It's still November, but probably one of the goals of the season. One of the best goals I've scored, I'm very happy. I say it is very much like Rooney's goal. I don't know which one is better. Both are incredible goals."
He was certainly correct in his assessment that it was "one of the goals of the season". But, better than that, it was the goal of the year…worldwide.
Garnacho, who only celebrated his 20th birthday in July, finished last season with ten goals across all competitions and is already on eight just under halfway through 2024/25.
It is the fifth time in 15 years of the Puskas Award that the winning goal has been scored in a Premier League match, following in the footsteps of Olivier Giroud (2017), Mohamed Salah (2018), Son Heung-min (2020) and Erik Lamela (2021).
