While Manchester United’s euphoric end to last night’s Manchester derby has stolen the headlines this morning, there are still murmurings over Marcus Rashford’s future at the club following his omittance.
It was certainly a courageous call from Ruben Amorim to drop two of the side’s top goalscorers for such a high-stakes clash away to their fiercest rivals – though one that ultimately paid off.
Perhaps Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho’s inclusions would’ve led to Amad Diallo being withdrawn before the dying embers of the match, during which he ultimately went on to win the penalty for the equaliser before clinching a last-gasp winner with heroics similar to last season’s FA Cup quarter-final.
All eyes will be on Carrington this week as the side prepares for Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie at Tottenham Hotspur. It’s a game where you’d expect one of – if not both – forwards to be given the nod, as when they’re in form, they can undoubtedly do damage. Rashford scored in each round of the League Cup during his career-best campaign in 2022/2023, including the final.

Even if he’s able to revive his stagnant form over the festive period, it may well be too little, too late for United’s No.10. Reports today have again reiterated the club’s desire to part ways with their homegrown academy graduate, prompting widespread speculation as to what’s going on behind the scenes.
Melissa Reddy has attempted to dissect the rumours this evening, explaining: “Sky Sports News first reported the 27-year-old was on a collision course with the INEOS leadership and their ‘clean culture’ approach in January after his third breach of former manager Erik ten Hag’s rules.
“Ruben Amorim, the new man at the helm, has also been unimpressed with Rashford’s application at the training ground and his general demeanour, which led to his omission from the squad on Sunday for the Manchester derby.
“While Alejandro Garnacho also had to watch United’s victory at the Etihad from home for the same reason, he has not been a serial offender, nor has he been considered a senior member of the team who should be setting an example. While Amorim has made it clear no dip in effort will be tolerated, the feeling is that the 20-year-old hasn’t run out of chances like Rashford, whom the club have been open to offers for since January.
“The issue then, in the summer, and as it stands now, is the attacker has no suitors due to his off-pitch behaviour, form, and mega salary.”
