The Nations League is wrapping up for Aston Villa Women, who are away from Birmingham at the moment. Included in her team's roster is Anna Patten. Playing for Ireland, the AVWFC defender ended up playing a crucial part in the 2-1 victory of Ireland over Greece.
Only named in charge this year, Carla Ward has a strong center-back duo that she can lean on in Jessie Stapleton and Patten. During the Greek leg, it was the current Southerland CB, who is currently on loan from West Ham, who found the back of the net. In Dublin, the Villa defender matched that effort with a fierce header off a corner kick.
In something telling of her comments, she emphasized the need to clean things up in the back and not concede. Scoring and getting two wins will, of course, always be welcomed, but it's a positive sign that the defender is always looking for areas of improvement. Speaking with The WNL Show after the fixture, Patten discussed:
"We can't have moments of lack of concentration in games like this because it's international football, and people take advantage of that."
These are words that will have a fantastic ring for Villa fans. A lot of games have been competitive throughout a lot of the match, only for a lapse to ultimately undo what could have been a result. Listening to Patten be more concerned about how to avoid such moments is something that will translate when club play resumes shortly.
An interesting tidbit also emerged from this pair of Nations League games. As is the case for any side, chemistry is important. The AVWFC defender mentioned an interesting development from the Ireland camp that has helped this squad under the new manager.
Speaking with reporters after the win, Patten shared that a certain fun element has helped to unify the players. Every group is different with varying personalities, but this aspect is something that the Villa CB is crediting for the good atmosphere within the team. As reported by Balls.ie., she shared the following:
"I don't know if you know the game 'Werewolf,' but we've been playing it literally every night. There was pretty much all of us playing it last night. We have a great culture in camp, and I think that allows people to feel really comfortable and lead."
The lighthearted activity of trying to decipher who the villagers are while filtering out the one who changes into a dangerous creature at night has helped within the Ireland team, according to her. If nothing else, it is a team-bonding activity that she also happens to be good at!
Whether it's this or something else, the Ireland international will look to continue her work rate and efforts when returning to Birmingham, possibly bringing a new pastime for her teammates after a long Aston Villa Women training session.
