The Argentine had struggled for fitness and consistency over the first half of the season.

But since the turn of the new year, Martinez has really started to look like his usual relentless self.

Martinez has proven for years at Inter that he can score just about any type of goals. From tap-ins to long-ranger screamers to headed goals from set pieces.

Martinez’s goal against Sparta yesterday evening wasn’t quite any of the above, however.

The 27-year-old had to really focus on the flight of Alessandro Bastoni’s floated cross. He had little time or space to do anything but volley it.

And the target was a very small one for the Inter captain.

Martinez had to squeeze the ball into the top corner at Sparta keeper Peter Vindahl Jensen’s near post.

Doing so on the volley took a great deal of concentration and skill from the Inter captain.

This was perhaps the sort of finish that Martinez would not have even attempted a few months ago when he was struggling to really find his inspiration and sharpness.

But Martinez didn’t have any thoughts of taking an extra touch, or playing the ball to a teammate.

The Inter captain went for the spectacular. And in the kind of form he’s been in, it was little surprise to see it come off.
