Arsenal legend Paul Merson has predicted a 0-4 loss for Southampton against Newcastle United at St. Mary's.

As usual, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is back with his prediction for the Premier League Matchday 23. And unsurprisingly enough, the former Arsenal man has a subpar prediction for the Saints.

Up next, Southampton would face Newcastle United at St. Mary's. The Premier League opening fixture is back, but unlike previously, there's much more at stake this time for both clubs.

While a gravely afflicted Southampton would be playing for some points, it ain't any different for Newcastle either. Having been thrashed at home recently, the Geordies would want the complete 3 points here.

And though it is hard to admit, the Saints are aware that it would be tough to secure even a draw, let alone a win. That is also the view of pundit Paul Merson, ahead of the fixture.

Writing in his Sportskeeda column, Merson predicted Southampton's fate in the fixture, mentioning: "I expect Newcastle to slaughter them. I just can't see Alexander Isak not scoring against Southampton."

The way Merson has confided in Newcastle man Isak speaks for the season he is having, currently. Having netted 15 times in 20 appearances, Isak has been on fire in the Premier League.

Additionally, it feels like the Swedish number 9 loves playing against Southampton. So far in his 2 faceoffs with the Saints, he has had as many assists, being clinical in Newcastle's win both times.

Needless to say, the Saints need their attack force running the ground as well. Sadly, to add further to their worries, Newcastle's 6'3 tall man Nick Pope would be back for the contest at St. Mary's.

Clearly, the Newcastle matchday comes as an uphill battle for the Saints. However, even though sharing points looks challenging, we must hope Ivan Juric's side turns up positively on Saturday.
