Arsenal are monitoring Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, but the player’s current club are trying to tie him down to a new contract.

Sami Mokbel reports for the Daily Mail that whilst Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon was the subject of concrete interest from Liverpool over the summer, Arsenal are also monitoring his situation very closely.

Gordon was reportedly open to leaving Newcastle for a Champions League club over the summer, but he ended up staying.

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Newcastle price Liverpool out of a move, and that probably put Arsenal off making a bid of their own.

Newcastle now want to secure his future, intending to offer him a new deal to make him their highest earner. Preliminary talks have opened for a deal worth around £170,000 a week.

Even so, Mokbel adds that if Gordon doesn’t extend his contract, Newcastle might then consider selling him next summer.

In the meantime, the 23-year-old arguably needs to focus on rediscovering his best form.

Gordon scored 12 goals and assisted 11 last season, but he only has one goal contribution in the first eight matches of the current campaign for club and country.

Newcastle haven’t had the most difficult start to the season, with two of their five Premier League opponents currently sitting in the relegation zone, and none higher than eighth.

Gordon needs to find his feet before the big games come around.
