In spite of some of the doom and gloom around Arsenal in recent weeks, the Gunners are currently on their longest Premier League unbeaten run since the Arsene Wenger days.

Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday was an important one, keeping the Gunners at least vaguely in touch at the top of the Premier League table, but the mood has been very low in the club’s fanbase this week.

Following Arsenal’s failure to make any January signings, Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz suffered hamstring injuries. Martinelli is set to be out for a month, whilst Havertz won’t play again this season.

Saturday was Arsenal’s first chance to show they could still compete even after those injuries, but the first hour of football was a dire attacking display that only made supporters more concerned. Some fans could be heard singing “we want Kroenke out” during the first half in Leicester.

Mikel Merino saved the day late on, scoring a brace to earn Arsenal three points, and in doing so he helped the team to a new milestone.

The Gunners have now gone 15 Premier League games unbeaten, with Squawka reporting that it’s their longest unbeaten run since April 2011 under Arsene Wenger.

With 10 wins and five draws, it’s still perhaps a little way off the kind of form Arsenal will need to find if they’re going to win the title this season. But it’s clear that the Gunners continue to be hard to beat, at least in the league.

Perhaps some of the recent doom and gloom stems from Arsenal’s three consecutive cup defeats to Newcastle United and Manchester United.

Whilst it’s been a long time since the last league loss, those three results were very disappointing and slashed the team’s trophy chances in half.

But the season isn’t done yet, particularly if Merino continues to play like a seasoned veteran at centre-forward, and Bukayo Saka and Martinelli return to action sooner rather than later. We can dream.
