Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Champions League with a 5-1 victory over Sporting CP on the road.

The Gunners had failed to score in their previous four away trips in the competition. They ended the goalless run with a sublime performance at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

There were several standout performers for the London giants, including Jurrien Timber, who started at right-back for the second game running.

The Netherlands international has largely played as a makeshift left-back this term, but the recent surgery for Ben White has allowed him to return on the right side of the defence.

The Dutchman looks much more comfortable there. He had a passing accuracy of 93 percent yesterday, with all of his crosses and dribbles completed.

Timber created three chances for his teammates, including an assist for Gabriel Martinelli’s opener. The £32 million-rated star also made two interceptions with one clearance and one recovery.

Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were brilliant in the final third, but Timber was also excellent with his link-up play alongside the duo.

The 23-year-old has the opportunity to cement his spot at right-back under manager Mikel Arteta, provided he can stay fit.

Arsenal have returned from the international break with convincing wins over Sporting CP and Nottingham Forest. They look to have found momentum at the right time.

The Gunners face London rivals West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday evening and they have the opportunity to boost their title pursuit with another three points.

Arteta’s side are nine points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, but the Reds face a challenging game against Manchester City, who will be determined to respond after a six-game winless run.
