Arsenal look set to finish in second place in the Premier League for a third successive season.

Injuries blighted the challenge at the worst possible time, derailing their momentum. Many people blamed manager Mikel Arteta for opting to work with a small squad.

This summer is a chance to correct that mistake, and new sporting director Andrea Berta will be tasked with improving the squad.

Arteta has now promised Arsenal fans they will go big this summer to bring in the players they need to challenge for a whole season, claiming that those within the club are ‘excited about it’.

Striker

At the top of the agenda for the Gunners is a lethal striker to lead the line. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are underwhelming. One should be sold to make way for a new centre-forward.

The Gunners are reportedly shifting focus to Sporting CP Viktor Gyokeres after getting priced out of a deal for his compatriot Alexander Isak.

Gyokeres is on course to lead Sporting to a second successive Primeira Liga title and would fit in the Arsenal attack like the glove it has been missing.

Right-wing

Bukayo Saka has been absent for the past three months, and the Gunners have felt his absence.

Arteta needs a winger who can step up when he decides to rest the England international. The Gunners must sign a player who can deliver the goods when called upon.

Links to potential free agent Leroy Sane are floating around. He would be a welcome addition to the Arsenal squad, although he may be unwilling to accept a back-up role.

Central midfield

The Gunners must add steel to their engine room, with Jorginho and Thomas Partey likely leaving this summer. Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is the top target, but they need another player.

Arsenal should keep Partey while adding Zubimendi to the squad. There may be insufficient money for two top-class midfield operators.

Berta is a fan of Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes. However, the Magpies will not be keen on parting ways.

Left-wing

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli rule the Arsenal left flank, but it is time to refresh that area. The Gunners could use fresh ideas and legs.

It may not be high on the summer wishlist, but Arsenal should consider adding an electric winger opposite Saka to take some of the burden off his shoulders.

Arsenal have been linked with Nico Williams, and other opportunities will likely arise for them to sign a left-sided winger. They should grab the chance with both hands.
