Wearing the armband on the night, Thilo Kehrer (28) walked away with the man-of-the-match trophy following AS Monaco’s 1-0 win over Bologna on Tuesday night.
Going into the encounter, Kehrer had never scored in the UEFA Champions League, that changed late on as he popped up at the back-post, poking home Breel Embolo’s glanced header. The goal not only ensures Monaco extend their unbeaten run in the competition, whilst also all but ensuring qualification for the play-off phase, but it also saw Kehrer elected man of the match.
“What is funny is that these past two days, I imagined winning this man of the match trophy,” said Kehrer, in a mixed zone interview, attended by Get French Football News.
“To win it (man of the match) as a defender, you have to score or to have an extraordinary performance. Above all, I’m glad that we won, but personally, it makes me happy,” said the centre-back.
Despite reaching the 10-point mark, one thought to be sufficient to reach the next stage of the competition, Kehrer says that the Principality club “won’t get carried away,” given the quality of opponent that awaits them. Monaco still have Benfica, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Inter Milan to face.
