Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur clash in the Premier League on Friday 16th May at 7:30pm. The match will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports.
Aston Villa are still chasing a Champions League spot, whilst Tottenham will have one eye on the Europa League final.
Three of the last six Premier League meetings between these sides have featured four or more goals, including the last two. With two teams who like to attack, and plenty on the line, this should be a offensive contest from the outset. Aston Villa need to pick up the win to keep pace with the sides around them and, with an inferior goal difference, will be looking to attack from the outset, whilst Tottenham’s defensive frailties have been clear for all to see this season and, if they play a weakened side with the Europa League final in mind, this could be a high scoring affair.
Brennan Johnson has scored in each of his last two matches against Aston Villa, while he’s the only Tottenham player to hit double figures in the Premier League this season. Johnson has found the net 19 times in 55 appearances in all competitions this season, proving himself to be vital to Spurs’ style of play. He’ll be tasked with playing off the right hand side and will look to exploit space in behind the Villa backline with his pace.
After losing to Manchester City and exiting the FA Cup disastrously against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa gave their European hopes a boost with consecutive 1-0 wins over Fulham and Bournemouth. Unai Emery’s men remain sixth, but are level on points with Chelsea who are in the fifth and final Champions League spot.
It’s been another impressive season for Aston Villa, who have impressed in nearly every competition, reaching the Champions League quarter-final and the FA Cup semi-final. They’ve guaranteed themselves European football next season but reaching the Champions League again will be the cherry on top for Villa fans. This is their penultimate league game of the season, before they face Man Utd on the final day.
Villa will be hopeful against a Tottenham side whose focus is now entirely on the Europa League. Ange Postecoglou’s side have reached the final of that competition and changes will be made for this Premier League fixture. Speaking of league matters, the Spurs have taken just five points from their last nine matches, slipping to 16th in the table.
It’s been a torrid campaign for Spurs on the domestic front, winning just 11 of their 36 matches so far. At present, they are in 17th place and although relegation isn’t an issue, it will still be embarrassing for all concerned if Tottenaham finish just one place above the drop zone. Whilst the focus will be on the Europa League final, there is still plenty of pride at stake for Postecoglou’s team and they’ll want to avoid needing a win in their final league game, against Brighton, to avoid finishing fourth from bottom.
Marcus Rashford is a major doubt but Villa could have a full squad available otherwise.
Tottenham will definitely be without James Maddison, Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall for this match.
Villa beat Tottenham 2-1 in the FA Cup earlier this season. However, Spurs have enjoyed recent dominance in the Premier League with 4-1 and 0-4 wins home and away, respectively.
