Aston Villa are looking to maintain their perfect record in this season’s Champions League at Club Brugge on Wednesday night.
Unai Emery’s team have made a dream start to their first campaign of the Champions League era, with three consecutive wins in the league phase. However, The Villans are aiming to bounce back from successive defeats in the Carabao Cup and Premier League.
Villa collapsed at Tottenham at the weekend to lose 4-1 in North London, having led at half-time. It was a disappointing defensive display from Emery’s men, who will want to rediscover the solidity that has seen Villa keep clean sheets in all three European games this season.
Club Brugge are the reigning Belgian champions and reached the Europa Conference League semi-finals last season. Nicky Hayen’s side, who have ex-Premier League names Simon Mignolet, Christos Tzolis and Dedryk Boyata in their squad, have one win and two defeats in the Champions League.
Matty Cash joined Ross Barkley in the treatment room at Villa Park at the weekend, after being withdrawn at Spurs due to a calf issue. It’s a relatively clean bill of health otherwise for Unai Emery, though the Spaniard could look to rotate his options this evening.
Villa face a tough trip to Liverpool in the Premier League at the weekend and the clash with Brugge could see Jhon Duran handed a start at centre-forward. The Colombian has been in brilliant goalscoring form from the bench in 2024/25 and could replace Ollie Watkins.
There could also be opportunity for Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara to step up their minutes after recent returns from long-term layoffs.
Aston Villa predicted XI: Martinez; Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Maatsen; Tielemans, Onana, McGinn; Rogers, Ramsey, Duran.
Club Brugge host Aston Villa in the Champions League on Wednesday 6th November 2024. Kick-off in Belgium is 17:45 GMT.
