Atalanta had a mountain to climb in their Champions League play-off with Club Brugge.
Thanks to the visitors' first-half onslaught, Gian Piero Gasperini's side needed to overturn a 5-1 aggregate deficit against their Belgian counterparts on home soil.
La Dea sent on Ademola Lookman at the start of the second half in efforts to stem the tide and he responded by clawing one back inside the opening minute.
The Nigeria international's comeback quest looked set to continue as he was awarded a penalty just 15 minutes later following a VAR intervention.
But Lookman was denied by his one-time Everton nemesis Simon Mignolet from the spot to leave the hosts still with three goals to claw back in the remainder of the tie.
Unfortunately they were unable to produce a memorable comeback as the damage was done in the opening 45 minutes.
