After a long break, Spain will once again return to action this week as they take on the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals.

Lamine Yamal is expected to play a key role for La Roja as they look to seal a berth in the semis.

Ahead of the two-legged encounter against the Netherlands with the national team, Yamal spoke to SPORT about Barcelona’s chances in the Champions League, among other things.

Yamal confident about Barcelona’s UCL chances

In the interview, Yamal sounded extremely confident about Barcelona’s chances of securing the Champions League this season, even labelling the Blaugrana as the favourites.

“We’re the favourites for the Champions League,” said Yamal, who scored a goal to remember in the club’s recent win over SL Benfica.

Explaining his decision, Yamal admitted that he had earlier pegged Liverpool as the favourites to win the UCL.

“When the group stage ended, I said Liverpool were the favourites because they were first, and now that they’ve fallen, it’s us,” he said.

Liverpool were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16. Interestingly, PSG have emerged as the other favourite to lift the UCL this season, thanks to the team’s brilliant form in both domestic and European competitions.

Yamal also made it clear that Barcelona are “not afraid of any opponent” and have a “strong mentality.”

Talking about how Barcelona are a different team this season, Yamal admitted that there is more togetherness in the team compared to last season under Xavi Hernandez.

“We’re a different team than last year when we lost to PSG,” he said. “We’re a family.”

Yamal’s immense confidence in Barcelona is yet another indicator of how the Catalans have rejuvenated themselves under the leadership of new coach Hansi Flick.

However, the road will be long and difficult if the club are to truly clinch the UCL title. For now, their immediate hurdle is Borussia Dortmund, last season’s runner-up, who have recently lost key midfielder Marcel Sabitzer due to injury.
