It is widely being reported that a new signing could end up being made by Barcelona sooner rather than later. Unlike their normal acquisitions, however, this would be a rather unique arrival for the Catalan club. An emergency signing, to be precise, that Barcelona did not have in their plans previously.
This emergency has become a reality due to the untimely and unfortunate injury to German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. Due to this unwanted circumstance, Barcelona are now being forced to contemplate the arrival of a new goalkeeper to add depth to the team.
As it stands, one of the names that seems to be at the top of Barça’s list is retired Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Currently aged 34, which is still not too bad for a goalkeeper, the former Juventus player is currently without a club and fits the criteria that Barcelona will have to adhere to in order to make an emergency signing.
However, according to SPORT, the club and the player are not going to be advancing negotiations just yet. That is because there is still a lingering issue that must be resolved by the Polish goalkeeper first with his former club from the Italian Serie A.
In his case, the issue in question is of him joining a top club following the termination of his contract with Juventus. One of the conditions attached was that the player would have to pay a financial compensation to the Italian team if he ends up joining a top team like Barcelona.
Fortunately, it is not a sizeable amount and Barcelona are hopeful that the player will be able to manage it and help resolve the pending issue with Juventus. Moreover, it should not take much longer for this particular matter to reach its conclusion in its finality.
Once that is cleared up, many sources now believe that Szcezesny could be one of the favorites to take over at Barcelona and the player himself is open to the move and even hopes to establish himself as a starter through his performances.
