Florian Wirtz and Xabi Alonso are highly sought-after, but Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro expects the duo to be at the Bundesliga club next season.

Speaking on Florian Wirtz ahead of their 0-0 draw against Union Berlin, Carro told Sky Germany that there is a “high probability” that the 21-year-old will remain at the club. “He has a contract until 2027,” added the Spaniard.

Both Bayern Munich and Manchester City are showing an interest in signing Wirtz, with the Rekordmeister reportedly ready to go into debt to sign the German playmaker.

Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß told Welt am Sonntag that to sign Wirtz, they would need a special fund, “like the federal government.” It’s no secret that Bayer Leverkusen would command a substantial fee for their star player.

Carro expects Alonso to stay at Bayer Leverkusen

Speaking on Alonso’s future, Carro told Sky Germany that the Spaniard “feels comfortable” at Bayer 04 and that they’re “assuming” that he will remain at the club.

Real Madrid – who have been heavily linked with Alonso as a future replacement for Carlo Ancelotti – suffered a 3-0 defeat against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League, which further fuelled speculation regarding Alonso and Los Blancos.

“I would have been happier if Madrid had won by a landslide and the coaching position at Madrid had been secured,” Carro told Sky Germany. “It’s normal in football that when a team like Real Madrid loses 3-0 to Arsenal in the quarter-finals, that the rumour mill starts churning. I would have preferred to avoid that.”
