We are beaten 0-6

We began 2025 with a bang - and a big opening friendly match of 2025 against a star-studded Bayern Munich side.

The star names from the German league leaders did not disappoint, as they passed the ball around with aplomb and sadly inflicted a 6-0 defeat on our boys. It was only a friendly match though, with Bayern about to resume their league season within days, while our winter preparation period has just started - and takes us to a training camp in Portugal later this week.

Match summary

New coach Thomas Letsch was not presented with an easy job in selecting his first starting XI, with some five of our boys ill, including new signing Karim Onisiwo.

We tried to beat the visitors' masterful midfield with long balls to our front two, and we did register the first shot of the evening via Diakite (7'). Vincent Kompany's side quickly gained a stranglehold on proceedings, however. We had been defending quite well until Bayern blasted their way in front from a set piece. Kimmich floated a corner into the middle and Eric Dier nodded straight in at the near post to make it 1-0 (10'). The visitors were continually able to show their attacking class as we offered little attacking threat of our own.

The second goal was forced over the goal line by Thomas Müller at the far post after the ball was parried his way (24'), and five minutes later Alex Schlager gifted Michael Olise the ball in the box and promptly had to pick the ball out of his net for a third time (29'). Our goalkeeper did make up for that with a stunning save four minutes later.

Shortly before the break our Red Bulls showed signs of life as Mads Bidstrup stroked a decent drive just wide - but we remained three down at half-time.

We started the second half with a completely new XI – but little changed in the flow of the play with a fluent Bayern soon adding another goal. Former Salzburg player Konrad Laimer stroked the ball forward for Olise to do the rest and make it 4-0 in the 48th minute. Bayern continued to combine and added another in the 55th minute via a Joshua Kimmich effort from distance that deflected cruelly past Blaswich. Vincent Kompany sent on several youngsters for the final 30 minutes and the final phases proved to be closer, but the visitors still had the final say on the scoresheet. Jonathan Asp-Jensen hit the sixth in the 78th minute and after a decent penalty claim for us was denied in stoppage time, we ended the evening without a goal.

Our work to prepare for the rest of the season will take us to Portugal on Thursday as we travel to Faro for a training camp. We will contest another friendly there on Wednesday 15 January at 16:00 Austrian time against FC Midtjylland before we have our first competitive match of the year at Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

We all imagined it would go differently, of course. I said before the match that we wanted to show that we have some plans - we still managed that. Bayern were two classes above us in every regard. The match showed in tough terms that we still have loads to do. We are talking about Bayern Munich though - a team that have aims to not only become German champions, but also to win the Champions League. They are brutally strong.

Thomas Letsch

We only started training four days ago and we are playing against the German record champions straight up - that wasn't the easiest task. There is a lot we can take from the match today. We made a few changes, and that takes time. There were some moments in which if we had played even more bravely, something could have been possible. It is no fun to lose 0-6, of course, but there were a lot of things there we can learn from for the preparation period.
