Juventus Women First Team defeated Como Women 4-1 away at the Stadio Ferruccio on Matchday eleven of the Women’s Serie A. They bring home three important points before the international break. The Bianconere remain top of the championship standings with 29 points, following nine victories and two draws.
The Bianconere started the match at a high tempo. The first chance fell to Barbara Bonansea's feet after a few minutes, but her volley was denied by Astrid Gilardi. However, it was the hosts who took the advantage in the 7th minute through Alex Kerr who slotted past Pauline Peyraud-Magnin to make it 1-0 to Como Women. Juve’s reaction to conceding was excellent: four minutes after the opener Lisa Boattin found Bonansea in the penalty area, who headed past Gilardi to equalise. Massimiliano Canzi’s team continued to control the game and went close to taking the lead in the middle of the first half, first through Pauline Krumbiegel following a counter-attack and then with Boattin’s wayward effort.
The score remained level until another header in the 31st minute: this time it was courtesy of Cristiana Girelli who diverted Krumbiegel's cross into the back of the net, putting Juventus Women ahead. Five minutes later the number 10 came close to scoring her second goal, but saw her shot blocked; the last chance of the opening half fell to Arianna Caruso, and she grasped it with both hands to add Juve’s third following a pass from Sofia Cantore.
The second half started with the Bianconere in the driving seat and Krumbiegel came close to extending their advantage with a left-footed shot that almost crept inside the far post. In the 52nd minute, Eva Schatzer nearly added another with a left-footed effort from distance that rattled the crossbar. Peyraud-Magnn remained alert during the second half and did well to prevent efforts from Nadine Nischler and Kerr. Girelli came close to getting her brace, again via a header, but Giulia Ruma (who took over from Gilardi in the Como goal at the beginning of the second half) was on hand to deal with it. The Bianconere put the game to bed in the 73rd minute: another left-footed shot by Schatzer hit the woodwork, but this time it went in off the post. Having wrapped up the three points, Juve controlled the game in the closing stages and secured their ninth victory in Serie A eleven outings.
“We approached the match well; we conceded following a goal kick – which can happen. However, we did well to keep working hard and playing well, it was not easy. They were in good form following four wins in a row, we knew that today would be a very complicated challenge. We deserved this victory.”
“On the chance that I scored, I shot towards the far post, taking advantage of [Valentina] Bergamaschi's pass. It's nice to score, I also scored here last year: it's a pitch that brings me luck and I'm very happy with the goal. It was very important to win, after a few games without a victory we got back on the right track.”
“I am happy with the result and to be back amongst the goals, as well as with the performance we put in as a team. We went behind and it's never a foregone conclusion to win this kind of match. We came into the game off the back of two defeats against Arsenal and the draw with Sassuolo, it was important to get back to winning ways and bring home the three points.”
