The former Metz man joined the Royals in 2022, initially on a short-term deal, and he impressed enough to earn an extended stay in Berkshire.

Whilst it has been a turbulent period for Reading off the pitch as they continue to hope for a takeover to go through, Noel Hunt’s side are performing well, with promotion a real possibility.

Such form has not gone unnoticed, as Africa Foot has revealed that several clubs are considering a move for the 23-year-old, who is set to be a free agent.

They claim that Watford and Blackburn, along with Ligue 1 outfit Brest, are all monitoring Mbengue, with ‘initial discussions’ having taken place with the player and his representatives.

It’s also stated that Mbengue is looking to play at a higher level than League One, which indicates Reading’s only chance of keeping the defender, provided the takeover goes through, is if they do seal a return to the Championship.

Unfortunately for Reading, it’s hard to see Mbengue sticking around unless they do manage to win promotion, but, even then, he could still move on.

He has been a standout player this season, with his quality and enthusiasm making him a firm favourite among the fan base.

For interested clubs, it’s easy to see why they are keen on Mbengue, as he is a good player and available on a free transfer, so he could be one of the bargains of the summer for Championship clubs. Plus, at 23, he still has plenty of room for improvement, so it would be an exciting addition.

Ultimately, Mbengue’s contract situation means he is in a place where he can decide his next move, and it appears he will have a big decision to make, although his immediate priority will be trying to help Reading finish in the top six.
