Liverpool are on the verge of securing a huge boost in their long-term project under Arne Slot. According to Foot Mercato, Mohamed Salah is “on the verge of extending his contract with Liverpool FC”, a development that will excite the red half of Merseyside and frustrate several high-profile European and Middle Eastern clubs.
With his current deal due to expire in June 2025, Salah had become the subject of mounting interest from across the footballing world. Clubs from Saudi Arabia, long-time admirers of the Egyptian icon, were reportedly preparing offers, while European giants PSG and Barcelona were said to be monitoring the situation closely. But Foot Mercato now claim that “a full agreement is reportedly close to being reached as minor details still need ironing out.”
The new contract is expected to be a two-year extension, keeping Salah at Anfield until 2027 — a full decade since he signed from AS Roma in 2017. That in itself is a remarkable testament to both his consistency and the club’s enduring faith in him as a world-class asset.
This latest move appears to be part of a broader strategy at Liverpool, who have begun the post-Klopp era with intensity and purpose under Arne Slot. With the club sitting at the top of the Premier League table, retaining a talisman like Salah underlines Liverpool’s ambition.
While terms of the new deal remain undisclosed, it’s suggested Salah “would get what he wants from Arne Slot’s Premier League table-topping side.” The mutual respect between player and manager seems to be a driving force behind the deal. Slot has already spoken positively about Salah’s influence both on and off the pitch — a leader in the dressing room and still one of the club’s most decisive players in front of goal.
While Salah’s contract is nearly secured, Liverpool’s work is far from done. Two other key figures — captain Virgil van Dijk and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold — are also in the final few months of their contracts. Of particular concern is Trent, who has recently been linked with Real Madrid. Losing a homegrown player of his calibre would sting.

However, the Salah news could act as a domino effect. Demonstrating the club’s ability to retain elite talent may send a strong message to other players and agents currently engaged in talks with Liverpool.
Tonight’s Merseyside Derby against Everton now carries an extra sense of optimism. In a fixture already steeped in emotion and intensity, this off-pitch development could lift the Anfield atmosphere to another level. Salah, who has made a habit of tormenting Everton, will no doubt relish the chance to give fans even more reason to celebrate.
As of April 2025, Salah has scored 210 goals for Liverpool in all competitions. Extending his stay offers him a genuine chance to challenge Ian Rush’s all-time record of 346 goals — a staggering milestone, but not impossible given Salah’s professionalism and conditioning at 32 years old.
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, this is massive. Just when there were fears Salah might be lured by Saudi riches or the European elite, news of a contract extension feels like a statement of intent from both the club and the player. It’s not just about goals — though his 210 and counting speak volumes. It’s about identity. Salah is Liverpool.
What’s particularly reassuring is the sense that he still feels he has unfinished business here. With Arne Slot’s side brimming with youthful energy and tactical freshness, the idea of Salah mentoring the likes of Ben Doak, Harvey Elliott and possibly new summer signings is mouth-watering.
This isn’t just a win for the dressing room, but for the fans — the ones who sing his name every week, who’ve made “The Egyptian King” a symbol of the modern Liverpool era. That era will now continue — and with it, the dreams of more silverware.
If Liverpool can now sort out extensions for Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, then the future could be brighter than ever. For now, let’s enjoy this huge win off the pitch — and hope for another one on it against Everton.
