Brentford fans had never seen their team beat Newcastle United in a Premier League match.

The closest they had come was in Eddie Howe’s very first ever NUFC game. Confined to his hotel room due to having Covid, November 2021 saw a 3-3 draw at St James’ Park.

Since then, Brentford fans had seen Newcastle win the next five, home and away.

That run of course ended 11 days ago, when poor defending and a dire second half, helped Brentford to a 4-2 victory.

In the League Cup, one previous visit for Brentford fans, a 4-1 NUFC win at St James’ Park back in 2001.

In 2020, Brentford fans did see (on TV during the Covid era) their team defeat Newcastle 1-0 in a League Cup quarter-final. Steve Bruce with incredible luck in drawing all lower league opposition, defeating Blackburn, Morecambe and Newport, before bizarrely played a weakened team against then second tier Brentford in West London, losing by that single goal in the quarter-final.

Brentford fans looking forward to the Newcastle United match this Saturday afternoon, comments via their Griffin Park Grapevine forum:

‘A mad influx of tickets sold suddenly. Geordies found a way in?’

‘Why would Newcastle fans be after our tickets? Home seats aren’t going to sell out for a cup game are they?’

‘They have a member ballot for all home league games as the demand is so high. They are also running this ballot for the cup game and given how hard it is to get to league games the demand will also be extremely high for this match. If anything they are more up for the cup than we are, they consider themselves a big club but have a trophy cabinet that’s gathering more cobwebs than my garden shed.’

‘Shifted quite a few more now , might even sell out the 1200.’

‘Looking forward to this..St James Park..will be a beautiful sight .and hopefully a right result to go with it.’

‘Any pub recommendations please.’

‘It’s Christmas in Newcastle, every single one will be great.’

‘So excited for this now, feels like Christmas Eve and can sense a victory!! COYB.’

‘Bierkeller? Sure this has my name on it!’

‘Been in there before….mental place !!!’

‘Thing is, as you know squire, bigg market has soooo many places to choose from, gawd only knows the carnage If we beat them.’

‘Personally, would love to see us manage a couple of the top players’ minutes while also pushing for a win. If Thiago can start, let him. Give Pinnock the night off to make sure he is staying fresh. Mbuemo and Norgaard a bit of a breather, sub them on around 60. Who really knows though, I just want to see them win.

If we get through Newcastle and Arsenal and Liverpool have off matches/rest too many players, it is very possible that the Semi-final round will consist of us, Southampton, Palace, and either Spurs or [Man] United, neither of which is scary this year. A trophy is truly within reach, and a reminder… winner gets European football in the Conference league.’

‘Play Meghoma but otherwise in a full strength defence – can include Ajer

Manage the minutes of the midfield based on who is most fresh from Nørgaard, Janelt, Yarmo, Damsgaard, Carvalho

KLP deserves a go further up in the Wissa role, Schade deserves a start and Thiago plays if fit.’

‘TF will go full strength.’

‘There’s really no reason not to is there, we don’t get to many Quarter finals. I find it a little odd how some don’t think we should go full strength.’

‘Ajer and Janelt for Norgaard and Mads only changes for me, 532 again but let’s go for it like we did second half vs Chelsea and hope for a bit more luck.’

‘I think Thomas will play a 3-5-2, tweaks in the starting personnel from Chelsea and starting higher up the pitch, but that didn’t do too badly against a team playing wide wingers, supporting full backs and lots of crosses.’

‘We’ll benefit from speed and mobility on Wednesday as their defence is a bit slow and the full backs play forward a lot. That’s a great opportunity to use Kevin.’

‘Each to their own but really baffles me that anyone would want anything other than our best team out there for a quarter final. Huge opportunity for us, and they’ll certainly be playing their best XI.’

‘Its a League cup quarter final , our first ever one away from home.

Massive game.’

‘I felt our selection on Sunday had one eye on the Newcastle game but I don’t think our selection on Wednesday, TF will have one eye on Saturday. TF will select a side he believes will win.’

‘Just saw this…

Brentford manager Thomas Frank on the test posed by EFL Cup quarter-final opponents Newcastle: “It is one of the greatest stadiums in the country and the fans will be up for it. It will be a heated atmosphere, I think they have fantastic fans and are coached by a fantastic manager in Eddie Howe.

“It is going to be a tough challenge in every aspect. We are up for it. We are really taking this competition serious and really want to progress to the semi-final.”

‘Full strength for me. Desperate to get through. Baffled by some decisions to play a weakened team. If I i had to choose, I’d rather win tomorrow and lose on Saturday…. Not often we get to a major QF.’

‘When we play 3 game weeks; whether it’s League or Cup; there is rotation. In these last games we’ve rested Nørgaard, Janelt, Thiago, Damsgaard, etc.’

‘This is the biggest game of the season so far. We’re not going to win the league but we might win a cup.

Strongest eleven possible please.’

‘Got to play Norgaard in this. We’re not as good without him and I want to go to Wembley to see us win our first ever proper cup.’

‘We have to go strong for this tie. It’s a semi up for grabs against one of Palace, Southampton or Spursy.’

‘Save Southampton for the final please. I don’t want any pressure at Wembley.’

‘I think the team selected doesnt matter as much as the mentality in the game.

I hope TF goes for it from the start rather than playing a more defensive style he may do in the league.’

‘It’s an important game but it’s not “massive”. Were still only at the QF stage and there still a few big sharks swimming around this pool.

So both clubs will select accordingly strongish sides but not the strongest available. I expect a fair number of fringers to get some game time and for recent absentees Ajer and Janet to start.’

‘It’s the first time it’s ever happened and we could win our first major honour , how more massive do you want it to be ?’

‘Geordies Desperate for a 1st trophy since Hadrians wall was built = take no chances.’

‘Eddie is not picking his strongest team. He said it right there.’

‘Where did he say that?

This game is huge for Newcastle if you hadn’t realised.’

‘I think Howe’s position is more tenuous then many believe, and whatever the result tonight, if they don’t win at Ipswich at the weekend they’ve then got 3 tough games in the league where they could easily end up with 0 points. They’d be stuck deep in the bottom half in the middle of the transfer window. Not a good place to be.
