Brentford were on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline at Wheatsheaf Park on Monday, as they were defeated by Cardiff City Under-21s.

Benjamin Arthur and Benjamin Fredrick were playing their first Under-21s league minutes this season which was a welcome boost but, despite a plethora of chances, it was at the other end that the team struggled.

Neil MacFarlane’s side were looking for their second league win of the season.

Ryan Trevitt had the first chance of the game, whipping an effort from the edge of the box, which fizzed just wide of the post.

The young Bees were putting early pressure on their opposition, as they continued to probe the edge of the away side’s box.

Iwan Morgan was next to go close as he was on the end of a Tony Yogane cross, however, he could not divert his shot on target.

The away side settled into the game but the Bees were still the side creating chances and Trevitt drew a great save from the keeper.

Will Spiers hit the crossbar for the away side as his wayward cross caught everyone out, almost finding the top corner of the net.

As the second period progressed, the game became cagey and neither side could fashion any clear-cut opportunities.

Trevitt found some space and delivered a whipped cross to the back post, but Yogane could not get his shot on target.

The Bees were building momentum in the closing stages of the game and Brieley’s fantastic cross found Caelan Avenell, but his header hit the post.

With 10 minutes to go, with their first meaningful chance, Cardiff took the lead through second-half substitute Tanatswa Nyakuhwa as the winger skipped past his man before firing into the bottom corner of the net.

Avenell then put in a great cross for Yogane who was free at the back post, but the winger rushed his header giving Jake Dennis an easy save to make.

The chances continued to come for the home side and Beaux Booth should have scored from close range but, under pressure, he failed to get a strong enough connection on his flick towards goal.

The defeat means that Brentford remain bottom of the Professional Development League having played five games.

The Bees are in action next on Tuesday 2 October as they face Charlton Athletic U21s away from home.
