Bayer Leverkusen and Germany sensation Florian Wirtz is one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market heading into the summer window.

One of the teams interested in the 22-year-old Bundesliga gem are Real Madrid, who have been admiring the versatile attacking midfielder for a long time.

The interest in him seems to have piqued further in recent weeks given that Xabi Alonso, Wirtz’s current manager at Bayer Leverkusen, is expected to replace Carlo Ancelotti in the Real Madrid hotseat in the coming weeks.

However, Bayern Munich are also very much in the hunt for his signing and are believed to be leading the race.

Florian Wirtz on his future

Amidst the constant speculations over his future, Wirtz has now opened up on the subject, stating that he feels fortunate that so many top clubs are gunning for his signing.

Speaking in an interview with Sports Illustrated (h/t Fabrizio Romano), the German international said:

“I’m lucky to have so many excellent clubs right on my doorstep and to now be able to play for one of the best clubs in Germany and Europe.”

Continuing, Wirtz added: “It’s definitely tempting for me to leave my comfort zone at some point and experience something new. I know the football dressing rooms well enough and am convinced that I would quickly find my place anywhere.”

Bayern at the forefront

Despite Real Madrid’s continued interest, recent reports suggest that Wirtz is likely to stay in Germany by signing for Bayern Munich in the summer.

Indeed, the 22-year-old’s camp has been in talks with the Bavarian giants and an agreement is already believed to be in place.

As such, Real Madrid’s interest in Wirtz is unlikely to lead to anything substantial this summer, more so considering that the Spanish capital giants have other, more immediate priorities at the moment.
