Manchester City legend and former captain, Fernandinho has sent new signing Vitor Reis an enormous challenge as the latter’s Etihad Stadium career begins this month.

The pair were united at the City Football Academy this week as Fernandinho made a return to Manchester having left the club and returned to Brazil to close out the final years of his professional playing career.

Vitor Reis has since been unveiled as a Manchester City signing, becoming the second new arrival of the January transfer window, after Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens in a deal, and in a deal understood to be worth in the region of £30 million.

Reis was hugely complimentary of the football club he had joined, telling club media in his first interview, “The magnitude of Manchester City, its history, its structure… I followed a lot in the last few years.

“All we watch on TV is Manchester City so every kid that loves football is certainly watching Manchester City. When the door knocked and it was Manchester City, I knew there wasn’t anywhere else to go.”

Speaking during an exchange within the City Football Academy over the course of the weekend, club legend and fellow Brazilian, Fernandinho set a clear challenge to Reis upon the pair being introduced by the club’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain.

The 60-year-old official told Fernandinho during media duties with the 19-year-old central defensive signing, “He (Vitor Reis) will stay here more years than you!”

The Brazilian midfield legend, who is widely regarded as being one of Manchester City’s greatest-ever players, responded in the direction of Reis, “I stayed here (at the Etihad Stadium) for nine years! Can you do it?!”

Fernandinho is widely regarded as being one of Manchester City’s greatest-ever players and certainly one of Txiki Begiristain’s greatest signings, joining the club as a 28-year-old from Shakhtar Donetsk and going on to make a staggering 383 appearances across competitions.

In that time, the now-39-year-old won a remarkable 13 trophies including five Premier League titles, and was handed the captain’s armband during the final years of his Manchester City career, in which he lifted the English top-flight crown in that time.
